‘She was so beautiful’: Mother killed by drunk driver in northeast Charlotte crash, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman died and her 3-year-old son was taken to the hospital after a drunk driver crashed into their car in northeast Charlotte on Tuesday, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to Reagan Drive at Ventura Way Drive just after 6 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found two cars with serious damage. Malonda Caldron, 44, was driving a Ford and had her son in the car with her, officers said. They were going to Caldron’s mother, Brenda Caldron.

Caldron was stopped in the westbound lane of Reagan Drive waiting to turn left onto Ventura Way Drive. Police said Anthony Ebron Jr., 62, was driving a Honda. Ebron, who was speeding, was traveling west on Reagan Drive when he slammed into the back of Caldron’s car.

“They had to cut her out of the car,” Caldron said. “While they were cutting her out of the car, her heart stopped.”

MEDIC took Caldron and her son to the hospital, where she died. Ebron is expected to be OK, authorities said.

“She was so beautiful,” friend Cortez Eberhart said.

Ebron was drunk at the time of the crash, police said. His license was already suspended from driving while impaired on Nov. 4.

After he was treated for his injuries, Ebron was placed into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked for impaired driving, possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

“I’ve got to live with this for the rest of my life,” the mother said. “We have a three-year-old boy that doesn’t have a mother anymore. He’ll never have a mother.”
